Nokia announced today (actually HMD Global) that it was adding an extra year of quarterly Android security updates for some of its first Android devices released back in 2017. Those models, the Nokia 8, Nokia 6, Nokia 5, Nokia 3 and Nokia 2 were promised two major Android updates and two years of regular security updates. Now, several of these models will each receive quarterly security updates up until the third year of their respective launch dates.
The Nokia 3 will be the first to start receiving the additional quarterly updates, which will begin in September and run every three months until September 2020. The other models will have a schedule as follows:
- Nokia 5 – Quarterly patch begins from October 2019 until October 2020.
- Nokia 6 – Quarterly patch begins from October 2019 until October 2020.
- Nokia 8 – Quarterly patch begins from October 2019 until October 2020.
There are some things we need to point out. The Amazon version of the Nokia 6 in the U.S. and India will lose support for security updates after October 2019. And users of the Nokia 2 will receive their last security update in November 2019.
“We aim to be completely transparent when it comes to updates and software. That’s why we want to ensure that Nokia smartphone fans know when their model will no longer receive the security updates they’ve been used to. This will apply to the full Nokia smartphone family – so everyone can benefit from a smartphone that stays secure for longer.”-Nokia
It might not be as nice as receiving a third major Android OS update, but it’s still refreshing to see an Android manufacturer step up like this to give its customers an extra 12 months of security updates.
